It would have been a mighty shame if Ross Brawn had been lost to F1 again. The unit came with a small integral wire mesh filter. Some pilots have installed electric fuel pumps into their systems, in addition to the Mikuni pump. Several ultralight manufacturers shipped their kits out using a sponge air filter. In the darkness, I tried to unload the plane alone.
This intern causes over heating of the engine and seizure. In other cases the screw on cap on top of the plug has become unscrewed allowing the cap to fall off, again resulting in loss of spark. The filter had corroded and collapsed. A simple shut off valve can be installed in the line to prevent overfilling. Landed in a farmer field safely. You know and I know that's it not true.
I neglected to respond to this particular statement in my first reply. This allows the engine to run for a short period of time before it runs out of gas, just about the time your 50 feet in the air. God, I love that plane. This generally causes erratic running, hard starting, and possible engine failure caused by the leaning of the mixture. Spark plug gap on points and condenser. How long will it be before you sucker a non-flying civilian into taking a joyride with you, and then end up with dirt in your teeth, and your passenger possibly injured or worse. Being new to all this I wonder if the Cuyuna has a reliability history as good as the Rotax.
Make sure that it is mounted away from any heat source, and that it is positioned so that the vent on the pump face is facing down. Maybe you don't have as much faith in your flying skills as I do in mine. It is not necessarily an airworthiness judgement at all. The 430R was the pusher. It is still being used widely on older ultralight aircraft, and on aircraft that were purchased prior to the influx of Rotax engines. The point is, with 2-strokes, you have to fly with your brain in gear at all times. This exhaust while a little noisy proved to be a better system.
Today little is heard of the Cuyuna although it is again being produced, and parts are readily available. We have many additional parts, both new and used, that were not included. Piston and rings may be available for some earlier Cuyuna engine models not listed above, by special order. But as I remember, they created hot-spots on the cylinder walls, causing scuffing in places, or so some said. The wing were folded back. Worst was the engine-out at 5,000. The first and most widely reported was the failure of the retaining clip of the jet needle, due to vibration and fatigue located in the carb slide.
Cleared out rocks, but underestimated takeoff roll needed. Had to truck it out in pieces. The line used to connect the pump to the engine impulse outlet is of a much thicker wall thickness than regular gas line, and is not effected by heat. In most applications the Cuyuna engine uses a 32mm Mikuni carburetor. This separation has been reported to be caused by fuel additives, an additional factor is the lack of support for the carb body and breather. The main thing is: you have to have your brain in gear.

The old Cuyuna 442 had problems with cooling because the air blew straight back through both cylinders, so the back one didn't get cooled as well. Kawasaki pistons are also in stock. Engine quit 30 seconds later. Between the engine cylinder and the intake manifold are found two black bakelight blocks. The inspection primarily has to do with verification of proper Placards, markings, paperwork, registration and that the craft is amateur built and meets the 51% rule; and to issue operation limitations for the initial flight hours. The first area is that directly under the clamp used to tighten the rubber manifold to the carb body. First the electric pump is capable of producing considerably more pressure than what the fuel system is set up for. Having been a Marine probably helps a lot, since they emphasize aggressive reaction: get off your ass and deal with the problem. My first appeared in a Kitplanes article in 2007. Electronic ignition should have completely cured that. I killed engine and stalled from about 20 feet, breaking a bunch of stuff. Read a book, watch a video, or see any of the hundreds of magazine articles on emergency training. I started to get chest pains and heart arrythmia, I guess from the excitement. The Helicycle was my first post- retirement project.
